TOPIx Cloud Browser and System Requirements: Complete Spec Guide

TOPIx Cloud is Jaguar Land Rover's browser-based diagnostic platform. Unlike the legacy SDD application, it runs entirely within your web browser. This means your browser, operating system, and hardware must meet specific requirements. Technicians frequently encounter login failures, slow loading, or incomplete module rendering due to outdated browsers, unsupported OS, or incorrect settings. Verify your setup before you subscribe or raise a support ticket.

Recommended Browsers (Chrome and Edge)

TOPIx Cloud requires a Chromium-based browser engine. JLR officially supports Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. No other browser is guaranteed to work, and most alternatives will fail at the authentication stage.

Why Chrome is Recommended

Google Chrome is the primary browser JLR uses for testing and development of TOPIx Cloud. Chrome updates automatically every four weeks, ensuring you always have the latest security patches and web API compatibility. We recommend Chrome as the default browser for all sessions.

Why Edge is Also Supported

Microsoft Edge is functionally identical to Chrome for web application compatibility. Edge is the default browser on Windows 11 and pre-installed on most Windows 10 machines. Ensure you are using the Chromium-based Edge (version 79 or later), not the legacy EdgeHTML version. Verify this by navigating to edge://settings/help and confirming the version is 79 or higher.

Minimum Browser Versions

The following are the minimum supported versions. Versions below these thresholds lack critical security updates, TLS 1.3 support, or modern JavaScript APIs required by the platform.

Browser Minimum Version Recommended Version
Google Chrome 100 Latest stable
Microsoft Edge 100 Latest stable

We strongly recommend enabling automatic updates. Chrome updates automatically by default. Edge updates through Windows Update. If your workshop PC is on a managed network, ask your IT administrator to whitelist browser updates.

Why Internet Explorer and Safari Are Not Supported

Internet Explorer 11 lacks support for modern JavaScript ES6 modules, CSS Grid, and TLS 1.3. JLR discontinued IE support in 2022. Safari is not supported because TOPIx Cloud relies on Windows-specific certificate management that Apple does not implement. Safari also handles third-party cookies differently, which breaks the JLR login sequence. If you are on a Mac, you must run Windows 10 or 11 via Boot Camp or a virtual machine.

Operating System Requirements

TOPIx Cloud requires a Windows environment. JLR does not provide native support for macOS or Linux, and the authentication certificates used by the platform are tied to the Windows certificate store.

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Recommended)

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is the recommended operating system. The Pro edition is required rather than Home because workshop networks often use domain joining, Group Policy, and remote desktop features that Home lacks. Ensure your installation is fully updated with at least the 21H2 feature update. Press Windows Key + R, type winver, and verify the version. Plan your upgrade to Windows 11 before October 2025.

Windows 11 (Supported)

Windows 11 is fully supported. All editions (Pro, Enterprise, Education) work correctly. If you are purchasing a new workshop PC, Windows 11 is the better long-term choice. Ensure TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled in the BIOS.

Windows 7/8 (Not Supported by JLR)

Windows 7 reached end-of-life in January 2020, and Windows 8.1 in January 2023. JLR does not support TOPIx Cloud on either OS. These versions lack modern TLS support, receive no security updates, and cannot run current browser versions. Upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 before subscribing. Running TOPIx Cloud on an unsupported OS violates JLR's terms of service and exposes your workshop to security risks.

Mac OS (Not Supported for TOPIx Cloud)

macOS is not supported. The JLR authentication system uses Windows-specific certificate stores and NTLM/Kerberos handshakes that macOS cannot natively provide. Even with Chrome or Edge installed on a Mac, the login flow will fail. The only way to run TOPIx Cloud on Apple hardware is to install Windows 10 or 11 via Boot Camp (Intel Macs only) or a virtual machine.

Linux (Not Supported)

Linux distributions are not supported. While Chromium on Linux may technically load the login page, the authentication and certificate management layers are not tested by JLR. We do not recommend running TOPIx Cloud on Linux for production use.

Hardware Requirements

Browser-based applications are often assumed to be lightweight. TOPIx Cloud is not. It loads large JavaScript bundles, high-resolution wiring diagrams, and real-time diagnostic data. Under-specced hardware causes slow page loads and timeouts.

Processor (Intel i5 or AMD Equivalent)

You need a modern multi-core processor. An Intel Core i5 (8th generation or newer) or an AMD Ryzen 5 (2000 series or newer) is the minimum. These processors handle JavaScript execution, SVG diagram rendering, and WebSocket communication. Older dual-core processors or Intel Celeron/Atom chips will struggle. For workshops running multiple tabs and diagnostic tools simultaneously, an Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 is recommended.

RAM (8GB Minimum, 16GB Recommended)

8GB of RAM is the absolute minimum. Windows 10/11 alone consumes 3–4GB. Chrome or Edge with several tabs can consume another 2–3GB. TOPIx Cloud's diagnostic modules, wiring diagrams, and parts catalogues are memory-intensive. With only 8GB, you will experience page reloads and browser crashes during heavy use. We recommend 16GB. If your PC runs TOPIx Cloud alongside JLR Pathfinder, 16GB is essential.

Storage (SSD Recommended)

While TOPIx Cloud does not install locally, your browser caches large amounts of data. A mechanical hard drive will slow down every page load and cache read. A solid-state drive (SSD) with at least 256GB is recommended. NVMe SSDs offer the best performance. Ensure at least 20GB of free space remains for browser cache and Windows updates.

Display (1920x1080 Minimum)

TOPIx Cloud's interface is designed for a minimum resolution of 1920x1080 (Full HD). Lower resolutions (1366x768, common on older laptops) cause horizontal scrolling, clipped menus, and unreadable wiring diagrams. A 24-inch monitor at 1920x1080 is the minimum comfortable workspace. For viewing wiring diagrams and parts catalogues side by side, a 27-inch monitor at 2560x1440 or dual monitors is ideal. Ensure display scaling is set to 100% in Windows Display Settings; scaling above 100% can cause rendering issues in SVG-based diagrams.

Internet Connection (10 Mbps Minimum, Wired Preferred)

TOPIx Cloud is a cloud application. Every page, diagram, and diagnostic routine is fetched from JLR's servers. A stable internet connection is mandatory. The minimum speed is 10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. We recommend 25 Mbps or higher for workshops with multiple technicians. A wired Ethernet connection is strongly preferred over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi introduces latency, packet loss, and interference that can cause session timeouts. If you must use Wi-Fi, ensure a strong 5GHz signal. Satellite or mobile broadband connections are not recommended due to high latency.

Browser Settings Required

Even with the correct browser and OS, incorrect settings will prevent TOPIx Cloud from working. Configure the following before your first login.

JavaScript Enabled

TOPIx Cloud is a single-page application built entirely on JavaScript. Without it, the login page will not load, and no diagnostic modules will function. JavaScript is enabled by default in Chrome and Edge. If you have disabled it, re-enable it by navigating to chrome://settings/content/javascript (Chrome) or edge://settings/content/javascript (Edge) and setting it to "Allowed".

Cookies Enabled (Third-Party Cookies for JLR Auth)

TOPIx Cloud uses multiple cookies for session management and authentication. You must allow all cookies, including third-party cookies. JLR's authentication flow redirects through Microsoft Azure AD, which sets cross-domain cookies. If you block third-party cookies, the login will loop indefinitely or fail with an "Authentication Error". In Chrome, go to chrome://settings/cookies and select "Allow all cookies". In Edge, go to edge://settings/cookies and disable "Block third-party cookies".

Pop-ups Allowed for TOPIx Domain

TOPIx Cloud opens diagnostic reports, wiring diagrams, and PDF documents in new browser windows or tabs. If your browser blocks pop-ups, these documents will not open. Add topix-cloud.com and *.topix-cloud.com to your pop-up allow list. In Chrome, go to chrome://settings/content/popups. In Edge, go to edge://settings/content/popups. Restrict the exception to the TOPIx domain.

TLS 1.2+ Enabled

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is the encryption protocol that protects data between your browser and JLR's servers. TOPIx Cloud requires TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3. TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are disabled by default in modern browsers, but some older PCs or managed IT environments may have forced legacy settings. In Windows, open Internet Options from the Control Panel, go to the Advanced tab, and ensure "Use TLS 1.2" and "Use TLS 1.3" are checked. Restart your browser after changing this setting.

Zoom Level at 100%

TOPIx Cloud's user interface is designed for a 100% browser zoom level. Zooming in or out will misalign clickable elements, break wiring diagram overlays, and cause text to overflow. If you have difficulty reading the interface, use a larger monitor rather than browser zoom. Ensure zoom is set to 100% by pressing Ctrl + 0 in Chrome or Edge before logging in.

Browser Extensions That Cause Problems

Browser extensions can interfere with TOPIx Cloud's JavaScript, network requests, and authentication flows. The following categories are known to cause issues.

Ad Blockers

Ad blockers such as uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, and Ghostery filter network requests and block JavaScript files based on pattern matching. They frequently misidentify TOPIx Cloud's scripts as trackers and block them. If the platform loads a blank page or fails to log in, disable your ad blocker and refresh. We recommend whitelisting topix-cloud.com or disabling ad blockers during TOPIx Cloud sessions.

VPN Extensions

VPN browser extensions route your traffic through remote servers, changing your IP address and sometimes your apparent location. JLR's authentication system geo-restricts access based on subscription territory. A VPN can trigger a security flag, causing your account to be temporarily locked or your session to be rejected. Disable the extension before accessing TOPIx Cloud. Workshop PCs should not use VPNs unless required by IT policy.

Password Managers (May Conflict with JLR Auth)

Password managers such as LastPass, Bitwarden, and 1Password can auto-fill credentials into the JLR Azure AD login form. Some inject JavaScript that conflicts with Microsoft's authentication flow, causing infinite redirect loops or sign-in errors. If you experience login issues, try entering your credentials manually or use the browser's built-in password manager instead.

Developer Tools Extensions

Extensions that modify the DOM, intercept network requests, or inject CSS can break TOPIx Cloud's rendering. The platform uses a React-based frontend with strict state management. External DOM manipulation causes state desynchronisation and UI crashes. Disable these extensions before using TOPIx Cloud.

How to Check Your Browser Compatibility

Before subscribing or contacting support, perform these checks.

Simple 5-Step Test

Follow these steps:

  1. Check your browser version. Open Chrome or Edge, type chrome://version or edge://version, and confirm the version is 100 or higher.
  2. Check your operating system. Press Windows Key + R, type winver, and confirm you are running Windows 10 (21H2 or later) or Windows 11.
  3. Check JavaScript and cookies. Navigate to chrome://settings/content/javascript or edge://settings/content/javascript and ensure JavaScript is allowed. Check cookie settings and confirm third-party cookies are not blocked.
  4. Check TLS settings. Open Internet Options from the Control Panel, go to the Advanced tab, and ensure TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are enabled.
  5. Test the login page. Visit the TOPIx Cloud login page. If the page loads and the login form renders, your browser is compatible. If you see a blank page or redirect loop, review the settings above.
